Here is a perfect example of something that sounds like a good deal but isn't one. Right now, Toys-R-Us is running a Buy One Get One for 40% Off promotion on Disney movies. However, I have been keeping an eye on Disney movie prices over the last couple of months or so and I happen to know that Toys-R-Us has had most of their Disney blu-ray movies (including Monsters University, Planes pre-order, Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan, to name a few) marked at $22.99 for at least the last couple of months. For this sale, they have raised those prices back up to the list price of $29.99. So for any of you doing the math, that comes out to $23.99 per movie when you take advantage of their current promotion--$1.00 more than the price you could have grabbed these movies for any day over the past couple of months.
The moral of the story is that to find great deals, you need to have some awareness of what the item you're looking for normally sells for (not just its list price, but its actual selling price). If you don't know what a reasonable price is, you're likely to get sucked into not-great deals like this one.
By the way, if you're interested in Disney movies as Christmas gifts, I would hold out for Black Friday. As a general rule, that is the best day of the year to buy movies. So far most of the stores have not leaked their Black Friday ads, but Toys-R-Us has and it looks like they will have a number of popular Disney blu-rays for $14.99 each.
Great advice!!
